The Challenges of Trading: Why It’s So Hard

Posted on September 1, 2023August 30, 2023 By Anmol

Trading is often portrayed as an avenue to financial freedom and success, but it’s important to recognize that it’s not a path without obstacles. Engaging in trading, whether it’s stocks, forex, or cryptocurrencies, presents a myriad of challenges that can make it an incredibly demanding and complex endeavor. Here’s a closer look at some of the key reasons why trading is so hard.

  1. Emotions: Trading is a battle against our own emotions. The inherent human tendency to be influenced by fear, greed, and impatience can wreak havoc on trading decisions. Changing core beliefs and controlling emotions are extremely difficult tasks, akin to the struggles faced by those trying to overcome addictions. Emotions can lead traders to make impulsive decisions that deviate from their trading plans and strategies, often resulting in losses.
  2. Slippage + Behavior Issues (emotions): Slippage, bad fills, shakeouts, and other forms of slippage can significantly impact trading outcomes. Slippage refers to the discrepancy between a trader’s planned execution and the actual execution due to psychological factors. The fear of missing out (FOMO) can lead to entering trades at unfavorable prices or exiting prematurely.
  3. Accessibility and Cost: Trading fees are often underestimated, with commissions and platform fees eating into profits. The cost of trading can be particularly significant for active day traders who execute multiple trades daily. The prevalence of fees makes consistent profitability a challenging feat to achieve, especially for traders with smaller accounts.
  4. Unique Stress Factors: Trading is unlike traditional jobs where a fixed salary is earned regardless of daily performance. Successful trading requires a mastery of skills and emotional control, and even then, losses are inevitable. The constant uncertainty and the potential for losing money on bad days can create immense stress, making trading more mentally taxing than conventional professions.
  5. Need for Experience: Experience is crucial in trading, yet the only way to gain real experience is through real trades, which often means spending money. Unlike other professions that pay individuals to gain experience, trading requires traders to invest their own capital to learn from their mistakes. This entry cost can be steep, especially for beginners, and it’s essential to recognize that losses are an inherent part of the learning process.
  6. Low Entry Barrier: The relatively low entry barrier into trading can attract individuals seeking quick wealth without a proper understanding of the markets. This influx of inexperienced traders can lead to market inefficiencies and increased volatility. The allure of quick profits can cloud judgment and encourage risky behaviors, contributing to the overall difficulty of trading.
  7. Trust Issues: Identifying trustworthy sources of education and guidance in the trading world can be challenging. Many educators excel in theoretical knowledge but struggle to apply it practically in real-time trading scenarios. Distinguishing between genuine experts and those looking to profit from aspiring traders’ naivety is a significant challenge.

In conclusion, trading is undoubtedly difficult due to the combination of emotional challenges, costs, unique stress factors, the need for experience, a low entry barrier, and the struggle to identify credible sources of guidance. To succeed in trading, individuals need to approach it with a realistic understanding of the challenges they will face and commit to continuous learning, emotional discipline, and prudent risk management. While the allure of financial independence is strong, navigating the complexities of trading demands dedication, resilience, and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures.
